Posted on 09/05/12

This morning new Festival Director Nashen Moodley excitedly introduced a world-class line-up of films for the 59th Sydney Film Festival, with countless Australian premieres bound to take over any cinephile’s June diary.

The 2012 Sydney Film Festival opens Wednesday 6 June with the world premiere of Not Suitable For Children, the highly anticipated Australian comedy/drama set in Sydney’s inner west and starring True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten.

Our picks for the festival are below:

Official Competition

  •   –  Sundance favourite Beasts of the Southern Wild,
  •   –  Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar,
  •   –  Australia’s Dead Europe based on the novel by Christos Tsiolkas (The Slap),
  •   –  The adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s generation-defining novel On The Road,
  •   Berlinale-winner Tabu,
  •   -  Senegal’s first-ever film in the competition Today and plenty more.

Out of competition you’ll be able to catch some of the most exciting premieres of the year, including revered Austrian director Michael Haneke’s newest feature Amour, Wes Anderson’s latest star-studded adventure in quirkiness with Moonrise Kingdom, and the world premiere of moving Australian biopic Mabo starring Deborah Mailman.

There are reimaginings of Wuthering Heights  and Faust, the Cannes Grand Prix winner Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, along with the thrilling debut of Captive starring Isabelle Huppert.

Home-grown documentaries compete in the FOXTEL Australian Documentary Prize, including Killing Anna about a man who arranges a fake funeral for a lover who unceremoniously dumps him, and the world premiere of Missing in the Land of the Gods, which follows two parents’ frantic search for their missing son in northern India.

The international documentary line-up includes the controversial Bully, the dramatic investigation of a woman whose remains were found in her UK apartment three years after her death in Dreams of a Life,  and this year’s Oscar-winner Undefeated.

For the first time this year the brilliant team behind Jurassic Lounge and Kino bring you the Sydney Film Festival Hub, a space at Lower Town Hall that will feature parties, talks, live music and much more – free every night of the Festival. There’s also the vibrant selection of short films from Australia and around the world, along with an eight-film Bertolucci retrospective, and the return of the Sounds On Screen program of music-centric docos and films.
