The canals in Venice are overflowing with the arrival of international film stars, the ever-so-eager paparazzi and an influential crowd of film critics.
As always, the competition is fierce and it’s a tough audience to impress. George Clooney’s The Ides of March, which opened the Festival on Wednesday has done quite well and has received some solid early reviews.

Madonna’s film W.E. on the other hand (which is screening out of the official Venice competition) hasn’t fared so well.
The film stars Andrea Riseborough, Abbie Cornish, James D’Arcy and Oscar Isaac. It sets out to be “a romantic exploration of the mysterious connection across decades between two women confronting the consequences of desire” but UK film critic Xan Brooks has described it as “a primped and simpering folly, the turkey that dreamed it was a peacock” and scored the film 1 out of 5 stars. Most reviewers agree that the pop icon hasn’t pulled it off with W.E., but the film is still watchable, if only for the exotic locations and luxury brand names splashed throughout it.

Italian drama Baaria featured at the Venice Film Festival in 2009 and is a part of World Movies Eight Days of Italy, starting Sunday night 8.30pm.
