Here at World Movies, we were lucky enough to see one of the most heralded films of the past year at the opening night of the recent Possible Worlds Film Festival – Academy Award nominee Sarah Polley’s extraordinary Stories We Tell. This film is a deeply moving portrait of a family dealing with a legacy of secrets and lies, and the elusive nature of truth itself.
Stories We Tell delves into the complex life of Diane, Sarah Polley’s aspiring actress mother, and the shockwaves that a series of impulsive actions unleash on her children, husband and community. It’s a film that explores our notions of family and family secrets. It’s also a film about perspectives and how these shift how we view our own stories.
With this groundbreaking new feature that seamlessly blends past and present, the real and the imagined, Polley’s characteristically unflinching yet compassionate gaze delivers a level of depth and emotion only hinted at by her acclaimed earlier directorial works, Away From Her and Take This Waltz. It’s a story that’s full of surprises and last minute twists, and we encourage you to avoid seeking out any possible spoilers to allow yourself to truly experience the film as Polley intended.
Stories We Tell is in Australian cinemas September 26, and to celebrate we are giving away 10 in-season double passes worth $37 to use at participating cinemas.
