It’s time to embrace the Spanish flair inside of all of us! The Spanish Film Festival returns to Australia this month – bringing with it a vibrant fiesta of films showcasing the very best in contemporary Spanish and Spanish-language cinema. This year’s festival features 38 films – and with a selection ranging from laugh-out loud comedies to heartwarming dramas, there’s something for everyone.
The festival opens on April 21 in Sydney, and to help you out with the navigating the impressive programme, here are a few of our favourites from this year’s lineup.
How could we not make mention of the biggest Spanish box-office hit in history? This comedic gem won the hearts of over two million people in its opening weeks, securing itself as a must-see in this year’s programme. The film follows the young Rafael, who leaves his homeland in pursuit of love. What ensues is a classic comedy of errors.
This powerful and heartfelt drama follows Natalia and Carols – a couple in their 20s who are caught in the midst of Spain’s economic crisis. When Natalia falls pregnant, they resort to unconventional measures to earn some money. This one’s sure to be a tear-jerker, so we recommend bringing along some tissues.
Foodies – this one’s for you! You may have heard of Gast√≥n Acurio, the man responsible for Peruvian cuisine’s global popularity. This mouth-watering doco follows the restaurateur’s mission to change his country with his food. Warning: don’t watch this one on an empty stomach.
This cinematic jewel was nominated for best foreign-language film at the recent Academy Awards. Compromising of six rebellious vignettes – a deadly case of road rage, a wedding gone wrong, accidental manslaughter, and more – this is one wickedly funny flick.
I am from Chile
A powerful, human story about immigration and settling into a new country. Inspired by the director’s own experiences, the story follows the na√Øve Salvador who moves to London from Chile to study at his parent’s expense. When a financial crisis strikes back home, Salvador has no choice but to make ends meet on his own.
