Here at World Movies, we love films that not only keep us entertained, but challenge and inspire us. So we’re thanking our lucky stars that Selma is soon to be released, which will no doubt touch thousands of movie-goers worldwide. With superb direction, gripping performances and moving themes, it’s no surprise that the film has already won a Golden Globe and is nominated for two Academy Awards.
Directed by Ava DuVernay and starring David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo and Tim Roth, Selma is a remarkable tale tackling the ever relevant issue of racial prejudice. The film marks the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s iconic marches from Selma to Montgomery and is produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B company (responsible for 12 Years a Slave) and Oprah Winfrey. It tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic struggle to secure voting rights for African-Americans.
This was the dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated in the epic march from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama that galvanised American public opinion and persuaded President Johnson to introduce the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
