Next week, we’re putting the focus on Italian beauty Monica Bellucci. The stunning actress and fashion model shot to stardom in the 1990s, and is considered one of the world’s most beautiful women.
We’re celebrating some of the screen siren’s finest work over two stunning nights with WM FOCUS ON: MONICA BELLUCI– featuring the mystery-thriller Irreversible (Monday 26 January 9.30pm) and the romantic comedy Ages of Love (Tuesday 27 January, 9.30pm).
To tide you over until then, we’re taking a look at some of our favourite Monica Bellucci performances – from the sensual to the unnerving, we’ve got all bases covered.
Malèna (Italy, 2000)
This film is set in a Sicilian town in the 1940s, where Bellucci plays the heroine that drives men to lust and their wives to plot revenge. The young and gorgeous Mal√®na Scordia evokes a grand tradition of Italian screen goddess: part siren, part muse and all trouble. However she also creates a wrenching portrait of a woman victimised by the society she lives in. Bellucci herself has said “for me, Malena is a product of her era, in that she can’t have an identity apart from men”.
Irreversible (France, 2002)
Shocking, disturbing and daring, this isn’t a film for the light-hearted. Monica Bellucci stars as the beautiful Alex, who is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in a Parisian underpass. In this film she is treated not simply as a sex object, but as a fierce woman who fights back against the rapist. Bellucci’s performance of Alex captures her not only as a sensuous being, but as a fighter with a strong survival instinct.
The Matrix Reloaded (USA, 2003)
This visually dazzling and intellectually challenging sci-fi blockbuster stars Bellucci as Persephone, the wife of Merovingian, who is determined to stop Neo from saving humankind. Bellucci’s character is angry at her husband’s flirtations with other women, and so offers to help Neo – but only in exchange for a taste of his affections. Bellucci combines her usual sensuality with a fierce determination, making for a truly impressive performance.
L’Appartement (France, 1996)
Monica Bellucci stars alongside her ex-spouse Vincent Cassel in this enigmatic drama, centred on a romantically-obsessed corporate man. Cassel’s character leaves his world behind in the search of Lisa, his elusive lost love. However when he eventually finds her, she may not be quite what she seems. Monica Bellucci charms, seduces and captivates us as the mysterious and drop-dead gorgeous siren, Lisa.
Tears of the Sun (USA, 2003)
This action film follows a group of Navy Seals who are dropped into a Nigerian civil war zone to airlift four U.S. nationals to safety from a hospital. Monica Bellucci plays Dr. Lena Kendricks who refuses to be saved unless she can bring her patients. The Italian talent delivers an inspiring performance of a strong woman who isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes is right.
WM Focus On: Monica Bellucci kicks off on Monday 26th of January at 9.30pm.
