The striking feature film debut of writer-director Alexandre Moors is a harrowing yet restrained psychological thriller about an abandoned boy lured to America into the shadows of a dangerous father figure. A couple’s preteen children inexplicably reappear after being lost overnight on a desolate, cave-riddled mountainside. Becoming withdrawn and beginning to exhibit strange behaviour, their parents quickly assume something sinister happened to them while missing and alone. Ichi the Killer (2001, Japan) – Australian Television Premiere
Wednesday 29 October 9.30pm
This cult masterpiece takes the classic Japanese Yakuza tale and turns it inside-out, with organs exposed and blood red in a relentless splatter cacophony. Controlled by a retired cop called Jijii, Ichi is a nervous and demented young voyeur murdering anyone Jijii deems a bully – and Ichi does not like bullies. Enter sadistic Yakuza lieutenant Kakihara, who has heard of Ichi’s fragile mental state and penchant for extreme behaviour, desperately wanting to meet Ichi, the only one he sees as a parallel to his own disturbed mind.
