World Movies stops in Ireland with Gerard Barrett’s gritty drama, Glassland.
“Toni Collette nails her role brilliantly in this devastating study of the troubled relationship between an alcoholic mother and her taxi-driver son” – The Guardian
“Glassland Will Leave You Shattered”- The Observer
John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother, Jean (Toni Collette), in a south Dublin social housing suburb, earning his living as a taxi driver. He returns home one morning to find his mother unconscious after another alcohol overdose. Jean’s best hope for his mother’s recovery is a private rehab clinic, but with no savings or insurance, John is forced to offer his services to a petty criminal to help pay for the pricey recovery program.
Glassland shines a spotlight on the dark underbelly of alcoholism as an addition that plagues our loved ones and destroys relationships. It also questions society’s treatment of addiction through a broken public health-care system that is mostly unattainable by those living in poverty.
Toni Collette delivers a stellar performance as a likeable yet suffering individual and mum who is losing control, except in those few moments she gets respite from her silent friend, the bottle. Her son Jack, meanwhile, does everything in his power to help his mum, before it’s too late.
Watch Glassland on Friday 25 November at 8.30pm – another film part of WM Storytellers: 30 Films From Across the Globe, 8.30pm every night in November.
